Historical overview
Mild lower urinary tract infections or mild cystitis are common,
unpleasant and painful infections that sometimes resolve
themselves. However, in certains cases, it can lead to serious
complications like pyelonephritis, an infection of the kidneys.
Many herbs have diuretic, antibiotic or anti-inflammatory
properties, but few have all the required virtues to adequately
relieve urinary infections. As a result of this, the herbalist
traditionally therefore uses a synergistic complex in which each
herb is used for its own effect but where the whole is more
effective than its individual components.
Actions and pharmacology
Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea)
Echinacea (see Echinaforce’s information sheet) is known for its
effect on the immune system. In this formula, it is used to
increase the immune system's response and improve the body’s
defense mechanisms.
The German Commission E acknowledges its benefits in cases of:
chronic infections of the lower urinary tract.
Uva Ursi (Arctostaphylos uva ursi)
Uva Ursi (also known as Bearberry) acts as an anti-inflammatory
for the urinary tract and as a mild diuretic. It also has the
reputation of dissolving kidney stones (litholytic). This effect
has been demonstrated in vivo.(1) Uva Ursi’s active
ingredients are arbutine, methylarbutine, hydroquinones,
flavonoids and tannins. Arbutine and hydroquinones have proven
urinary antiseptic properties. Uva Ursi is effective against many
of the bacteria responsible for urinary infections.(2)
The German Commission E acknowledges its benefits in cases
of: inflammatory disorders of the efferent urinary tract.
Sweet Sumach (Rhus aromatica)
Sweet Sumach, a source of tannins, has astringent properties and
is therefore useful to tone up the pelvic area. It is
traditionally used for urinary incontinence, enuresis, kidney and
bladder problems and certain types of uterine hemorrhages.
St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
Although today's science focuses mainly on its antidepressant
effect, St-John's Wort has numerous other properties. Scientific
literature has demonstrated antiviral, anti-inflammatory,
antibacterial, astringent and vulnerary effects, all of which are
put to good use in Cystoforce.(3)
The German Commission E acknowledges its benefits in cases
of: psychovegetative disturbances.
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
Yarrow has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, hemostatic,
antispasmodic and antimicrobial properties that have now been
demonstrated in vivo and in vitro.(4)
The German Commission E acknowledges its benefits in cases
of: spastic discomforts of the gastrointestinal and urinary tract.
Flowering Oats (Avena sativa)
Flowering Oats is traditionally used to reinforce the body in
cases of incontinence and enuresis.
Flowering Oats is listed in the unapproved herbs section in the
German Commission E for: connective tissue deficiencies, weakness
of the bladder and as a tonic.
Aspen (Populus tremula)
Aspen is a source of salicine, a compound with aspirin-like
analgesic effects, without aspirin's effect on blood clotting.
Aspen (bark and leaf) is listed in the unapproved herbs section in
the German Commission E for: nervous bladder and atony of the
bladder sphincter.
Belladonna (Atropa belladonna)
Belladonna is the main source of atropine, the anticholinergic
prototype. These substances are unequalled to relieve spasms and
urinary urgency.
The German Commission E acknowledges its benefits in cases of:
spasms and colic-like pain in the areas of the gastrointestinal
tract and bile ducts.
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)
Lemon Balm has sedative, carminative, choleretic, spasmolytic,
antibacterial and antiviral properties.
Scientific studies
No clinical studies have been published on Cystoforce's
ingredients.
Precautions, contraindications and
interactions
Contraindication: known allergy to one of the ingredients or to
aspirin.
Due to its emmenagogue properties, Cystoforce is not recommended
during pregnancy or nursing.
The following conditions require the supervision of a physician:
 | symptoms that last more than a week;

Urinary tract
infections (UTIs) affect 80 percent of women at least once in their lifetime.
Canadian women make about 500,000 visits to doctors per year, due to UTIs. Half
of all women over the age of 65 experience at least one infection per year.
The vast majority of UTIs are caused by bacteria (E. coli), which are
commonly found in the vagina and/or colon and rectal area and are introduced
through the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body). Women are
more susceptible to infection than men because their urethra is shorter and
situated closer to the anus. Risks that can create a vulnerability to UTIs are
blockages in the urethra (due to either past infections or structural
abnormalities), stress, pregnancy, food allergies, sexual intercourse, oral
contraceptive use, diaphragms, diabetes, a weakened immune system and hormonal
imbalances brought on by menopause. Waiting too long to pee also increases your
risk. Candida overgrowth is also a contributing factor. Women with recurring
vaginal infections have more UTIs.
Antibiotic therapy is the most common treatment. Bacterial resistance, candida
yeast overgrowth, irritable bowel and stomach upset are some of the few side
effects from antibiotic treatment. Antibiotics also inhibit the CP450 enzyme
system in the liver causing an imbalance in our estrogens causing an increase in
16-alpha hydroxyestrone the toxic cancer causing type of estrogen. Furthermore,
if you have recurring UTIs antibiotics can become less effective. Today many
doctors and researchers are recommending that natural treatments using cranberry
and probiotics be used first before antibiotics if no fever or pain is present.
Cranberries are an effective treatment for UTIs. The proanthocyanidins, also
called tannins, in cranberry inhibit the E. coli from sticking to the
bladder wall and halt the infection. Several studies using CRANMAX, an extremely
potent form of cranberry, proved relief for UTIs. It takes 34 pounds of
cranberries to produce one pound of Cran-Max – all the vital parts are used
including the fruit, seeds, skin and juice. Most cranberry products only use
dehydrated juice. A new study published in the Canadian Journal of Urology
involved 150 women between 21 and 72 years. These women were followed for one
year and those given CRAN-MAX had a 44 percent lower incidence of UTIs than the
group getting the fake pill.
Probiotics, friendly bacteria, are essential not only preventing and treating
yeast infections but also UTIs. Probiotic Essentials containing Bifidobacterium
longum, has been extensively researched for the last 30 years where it has been
proven to prevent and treat candida yeast infections and replenish the good
bacteria after you have used antibiotics. It supports the immune system and
lowers cholesterol levels too. It has also been shown to reduce E. coli
infection, the bacteria responsible for UTIs and prevent diarrhea and
constipation. Probiotic Essentials is shelf stable so it does not require
refrigeration and it is has the highest counts of friendly, good bacteria found
in these types of supplements. UriSense is an affordable combination of CRAN-MAX
and Probiotic Essentials to help eliminate UTIs and reduce the need for
antibiotic therapy with its side effects.
